NEXT SAINT MICHAEL’S GAME

· Saturday at Southern New Hampshire, 3:20 p.m.

HARTFORD, CT. — The Middlebury men’s hockey team (7-9-3, 5-5-3) suffered a 6-2 loss at #9 Trinity (13-5-1, 8-4-1) on Friday evening. The Panthers are back in action on Saturday when they head to Wesleyan for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop.

Middlebury had a great opportunity to get on the board during a power play beginning at the 2:38 mark, but back-to-back shots by Bret Pastor were denied by Trinity netminder Teddy Loughborough. The Bantams opened the scoring with 5:24 expired when Barclay Gammill’s shot from the left faceoff circle eluded Panther goalie Jake Horoho glove-side for the 1-0 edge. Trinity looked to double its lead at the 9:12 mark, but Gammill’s bid hit the crossbar and careened away.

Middlebury found the equalizer with 13:00 expired in the opening stanza. Conor Breen dumped the puck back to Billy Dobenski in the high slot, before Dobenski’s shot through traffic snuck past Loughborough, making it 1-1. The Bantams responded one minute later when Taggart Corriveau one-timed a pass on the doorstep to give the hosts a 2-1 edge.

Trinity increased the advantage to 3-1 1:25 into the middle frame. An initial shot by Andrew Troy just inside the blue line was denied by Middlebury’s Horoho, but Gammell was there to one-time the rebound into the net for his second tally of the game. The Panthers cut the deficit to one at the 16:53 mark after Owen Powers intercepted a pass in transition. Pastor connected with Powers’ pass, before finding the back of the net stick-side to make it 3-2. The Bantams answered with 1:05 remaining in the second period. An initial shot by James Callahan was denied by Horoho, but Riley Prattson was there to one-time the loose puck into the net for the 4-2 lead heading into intermission.

Trinity tallied a pair of third period goals, including a power play tally, to make it a 6-2 final.

Middlebury’s Horoho stopped 23 shots in goal. Loughborough made 18 saves during the first 26:37, while Jonah Capriotti denied 13-14 shots in the final 33:23. The Panthers held a 34-29 advantage in shots.
