HARTFORD, CT. — William Lemay and Vlad Dzhioshvili tallied back-to-back third period goals to pull Vermont within a goal, but two final tallies from Jonny Evans pushed the UConn Huskies (7-6-3, 4-4-2 HEA) past the Vermont Catamounts (1-11-2, 0-8-1 HEA) Saturday afternoon at the XL Center.<\/p>\n
HOW IT HAPPENED
\nMarc Gatcomb put the Huskies up 1-0 at 4:41 of the first period on the power play.
\nJacques Bouquot scored his first career goal off a Matt O’Donnell rebound at 11:21 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1. Bouquot crashed the net for the goal and a video review confirmed the call on the ice.
\nCarter Turnbull made it 2-1 UConn at 10:51 of the opening period with an assist from Yan Kuznetsov. Turnbull fired a puck from below the goal line and received a fortuitous bounce for the go-ahead goal.
\nMatt Alvaro brought the Catamounts even with the Huskies just 1:14 after Turnbull’s tally. Derek Lodermeier won the draw at the right dot to Alvaro, who walked across the slot before shooting against the grain to beat Tomas Vomacka (21 saves).
\nCarter Berger and Brian Regali tallied UConn goals at 5:30 and 6:15 of the second to push the Husky lead to 4-2. Berger’s tally came on the power play and Regali’s goal came from a Zac Robbins rebound. Jonny Evans added another Husky goal at 9:51 of the frame to make it 5-2.
\nLemay scored his first career goal on the power play at 4:54 of the third period to pull Vermont within two. Ace Cowans found the freshman across the slot on the right post for the goal.
\nDzhioshvili made it a one-goal game just over two minutes later as he found an Cowans rebound in the left circle and fired a shot past a diving Vomacka.
\nEvans tallied his second of the game at 9:01 of the third on a breakaway. He moved to his right before slotting a shot over Lekkas’ right shoulder. He completed the hat trick with an empty net goal at 19:45 of the third.<\/p>\n
GAME NOTES
\nBouquot and Lemay are the second and third members of the Class of 2022 to record his first career goal this season, joining classmate Andrew Lucas.
\nJohnny DeRoche picked up secondary assists on both of Vermont’s goals in the third period.
\nCowans and DeRoche matched career-highs with two assists apiece.<\/p>\n
