Men’s Soccer: Norwich Edges Castleton 2-1

CASTLETON – The Norwich University men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight straight games to open the season with a huge 2-1 intrastate rivalry win over Castleton University on Wednesday night at David Wolk Stadium.

Norwich (5-0-3, 2-0-1 GNAC) got a goal and an assist from freshman forward Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.), who continued his impressive start to his collegiate career. Senior captain Matt Hilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored his first goal of the season as well to lead the Cadets’ offense.

Castleton (3-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute with Jack Kingdon scoring an unassisted goal to take a brief 1-0 lead.

The Cadets answered back in the 18th minute with Hilton redirecting a pass from Nemeye into the back of the net tie knot the score at 1-1. Nemeye scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute by beating a Castleton defender on a jump ball in the air and then slipped it behind the keeper for the game-winning goal.

Senior goalkeeper Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.) made six saves to pick up the win and improve to 16-4-8 all-time in goal. He has played every minute of every game so far this season for Norwich.

Norwich is off this weekend and will travel to Rivier next Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. match vs. the Raiders in Nashua, N.H. The Cadets return home on Friday, Sept. 28 for a 3 p.m. matchup with the first-year program Univ. of St. Joseph (Conn.).

Castleton returns to Little East Conference action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts Rhode Island College at Dave Wolk Stadium.
