Men’s Hockey: Third Period Goal Carries UCONN Past Vermont

HARTFORD, CT –– Jachym Kondelik tallied the game-winning goal at 11:32 of the third period to lift the Huskies over the Catamounts Friday night at the XL Center.

UConn improves to 6-6-3 overall (3-4-2 HEA) and Vermont drops to 1-10-2 (0-7-1 HEA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
UConn’s Ruslan Iskhakov skated down the right wing and scored unassisted at 2:08 of the first period to put the Huskies ahead early.
A blue line shot from Cory Thomas found the back of the net through traffic at 16:15 of the frame, however, the goal was immediately waved off by the official. A video review confirmed the call on the ice.
Andrew Lucas tied the game at 1-1 at 18:02 of the first on the power play. The freshman one-timed a pass from William Lemay at the top of the slot and beat UConn netminder Tomas Vomacka (19 saves) high.
Ace Cowans put Vermont ahead 2-1 at 11:40 of the second period with his third goal in as many games. The Beverly, Massachusetts native blasted a one-timer from Jacques Bouquot to beat Vomacka high.
Vladislav Firstov tied the game at 2-2 at 14:14 of the second on a 2-on-1 rush with Benjamin Freeman. Firstov received a backdoor pass from Freeman and found the back of the open net.
Kondelik put UConn ahead at 11:32 of the third period. He found the loose puck in the slot and beat Lekkas low for the goal.
GAME NOTES
Stefanos Lekkas finished the game with 34 saves, his fifth game this season with 30 or more stops.
Johnny DeRoche picked up the secondary assist on Lucas’ man-up goal.
Vermont finished the game 1-for-7 on the power play. UConn went 0-for-5 on the advantage.
