BURLINGTON — The Spaulding Crimson Tide and the Essex Hornets took home the hardware on Monday night, earning Vermont Principals Association State Championships on the ice inside Gutterson Fieldhouse.
In the first game of the night Spaulding completed an undefeated season, shutting out the CVU/Mt.Mansfield CougarHawks 4-0. The Tide broke open a scoreless game with three goals in the second period … as Rebecca McKelvey, Bria Dill and Camryn Bell all lit the lamp.
Bell added her second of the night and 56th of the season in the third and goaltender Mattie Cetin put up 24 saves as the Tide finished the year at 22-0 and won their first championship since 2002.
In the nightcap defending champion Essex came in as the number three seed, but took down the top seeded Burlington/Colchester SeaLakers 4-2.
Essex scored early, getting a powerplay goal from Nielsa Maddalena just 3:24 into the game. After the SeaLakers tied it on a Madison Chagnon shorthanded goal at 8:14, Essex grabbed the lead for good on Celia Wiegand’s goal at 12:16.
Wiegand added her second of the night late in the second period and Abigail Robbins buried a rightwing rush blast early in the third to open a 4-1 lead. Meghan Lehouillier’s late goal for B/C accounted for the final score.
Sophia Forcier made 12 saves in back stopping the Hornets to their 16th win of the season and their second straight state title and fifth in the past seven years.
Courtney Rocheleau stopped 23 shots for the SeaLakers who end the year at 20-2-1.
