Hinesburg — The CVU Redhawks used a grinding ball control offense to open an early lead and went on to take a 20-9 win over the South Burlington Rebels on Saturday afternoon on the Redhawks home field.
After holding the Rebels to a three and out on their first possession CVU went on a long time consuming first quarter drive that culminated in Braven Bose’s four yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
The score held into the second quarter when CVU went to the air for only the second time in the game and South Burlington’s Paul O’Neil picked it off and returned it to the SB 32. However on the Rebels first play following the pick, their quarterback Nick Liscinsky was in turn picked by CVU’s Jacob Griggs, and Griggs return that one 37 yards into the end zone for the second Redhawk touchdown and a 13-0 lead.
That is where the score remained until the fourth quarter, as a resurgent SB defense held on. But finally with 4:02 to play Collin Vincent ran around the right side into the SB end zone. Vincent then added his second PAT of the day for a 20-0 CVU lead.
The Rebels would get on the board on a safety on a bad toss into the cvu end zone with two minutes to play. South Burlington would then take the ensuing free kick and march move it down field, scoring on a 12 yard pass from Liscinsky to O’Neil with 41 seconds left. Ms. McKenna Cooper’s extra point kick accounted for the final score.
With the win CVU improves to 2-0. South Burlington is 0-2.
