HINESBURG — Brad Reynolds scored a pair of touchdowns and CVU’s defense made those two scores stand up as the Redhawks advanced to the VPA Division One Semi-Finals with a 13-6 win over the Rice Green Knights on Saturday afternoon on the CVU Field.
Reynolds finished off a first quarter Redhawks drive, rushing in from one yard out for a 6-0 lead. Running back Braven Bose did most of the work on the scoring drive as the home team built a lead that would stand up into the second half.
The Redhawks would add to the lead in the third quarter when Reynolds hauled in a 49 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Graham Walker. Colin Vincent’s extra point kick made it 13-0 CVU with 8:06 left in the third.
Rice would get back within a single score when workhorse back Jack Fitzgerald scored from three yards out with 6:06 left in the game, but the visitors could get no closer.
Both defenses played very well, with special mention earned by CVU senior Chris O’Brien who was in the center of things for his team all afternoon.
With the win CVU improves to 7-2 and advances to the state semi-finals where they will play the St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers next week on the road.
The loss ends Rice’s season at 3-5.
