WILLIAMSPORT, PA — Corbin Williams went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a double, while Jake Holmes a pair of RBI to lead the Williamsport Crosscutters to a 3-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Bowman Field.
The Crosscutters jumped out to a 1-0 lead in bottom of first as Williams led off with a double and scored one out later on a Holmes sacrifice fly. Williamsport loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, but Vermont starter Seth Shuman got Holmes to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to keep the Lake Monster deficit at one run.
Reliever Osvaldo Berrios also worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fifth with a strikeout and flyout before Jose Rivas tied the game with a solo home run in the sixth. Williamsport retook the lead in the bottom of inning as Williams led off with a walk, then stole second and third before scoring on a Holmes RBI groundout
Crosscutters built the lead to 3-1 in bottom of sixth on a throwing error by catcher Rivas on a missed squeeze bunt rundown. Vermont got an unearned run in ninth on Lawrence Butler two-out RBI single, but Alejandro Made struckout Michael Woodworth with the tying run on second to end game for his first save.
Shuman allowed just the one first-inning run on four hits with two strikeouts over the first three innings, while Berrios (0-1) was charged with two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings to take the loss. Rivas and Diaz both had three of the Lake Monsters 10 hits on the night.
After Crosscutters starter Taylor Lehman tossed four scoreless innings, reliever Tyler Burch allowed the homer to Rivas when he entered game in fifth before following with three scoreless innings to earn the win for Williamsport (7-19),
Vermont (11-16) will wrap up the three-game series at Williamsport on Friday before returning to Centennial Field to open a three-game homestand against the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday.
