BURLINGTON — The top seeded Rice Green Knights and the defending champion St.Johnsbury Academy Hilltoppers have advanced to Sunday’s Vermont Principals Association Division One Championship game … that after semi-final wins on Wednesday night inside the Patrick Gym.
St. Johnsbury opened an early double digit lead and then help off a determined CVU comeback to beat the Redhawks 46-43. Logan Wendall scored 23 points, Matt Emerson chipped in seven, and Andrew Cowan added seven and blocked nine CVU shots to pace the Academy.
Tyler Morehouse led CVU with 16, and Ethan Harvey contributed 13 for the Redhawks who twice got the Academy lead down to one in the fourth quarter before coming up short.
With the win St. Johnsbury improves their record to 17-5. CVU ends their season with the same record.
In the night cap Rice opened up a 20 point third quarter lead and then fought off a South Burlington comeback to beat the Wolves 75-62.
SB got the lead down under ten in the fourth quarter, but the Green Knights secured the win by hitting 20 of 22 fourth quarter free throws.
Heath Walker led five Green Knights in double figures with 23 points. Michel Ndayishimiye added 17, Mo Awayle and Joe Joe Dubrul each chipped in 12, and Sharif Sharif contributed 10.
Khalon Taylor led the Wolves with 19 points. Aiden Devine added 18 and Evan Parker added 10.
Rice goes to Sunday’s title game at 20-2. SB ends their year at 15-7.
