Blakely Named to USBWA All-District I Team

University of Vermont men's basketball senior Marqus Blakely was named to the United States Basketball Writers Association All-District I Team. The USWBA made the announcement today.

Blakely recently racked up a slew of awards at the America East Awards Branquet last week including first team all-conference, America East Fans' Choice Player of the Year and America East Defensive Player of the Year. It is the third straight year Blakely has won defensive player of the year honors.

One of the most dominating players in the league, he finished the regular season by leading the league in steals (2.6 pg) and blocks (1.9 pg), finishing second in points (17.4 pg), rebounds (9.1 pg) and field goal percentage (54.1%), and coming in fourth in assists (3.7 pg). Blakely is a two-time conference player of the year and is the only student-athlete in league history to win the defensive player of the year award more than once.

With Blakely earning all-district honors it marks the fourth straight season and sixth time in the last seven years that a Catamount has been honored.

Providence's Jamine Peterson was named player of the year in the region, while Blakely was joined on the District I first team by Keith Cothran (Rhode Island), Jerome Dyson (Connecticut), John Holland (Boston U), Matt Janning (Northeastern), Jeremy Lin (Harvard), Peterson, Stanley Robinson (Connecticut), Joe Trapani (Boston College and ex UVMer) and Kemba Walker (Connecticut).

District I is made up of teams from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Blakely and the Catamounts host Boston U in the America East Championship on Saturday at noon.
